The
best review I can
give the album Outside
by Jellyshirts
is this: When IndepenDisc decided
to
“put their money where
their mouth is,” and actually release an album on a USB
Flashdrive, in an effort to
save the album format and preserve the full fidelity of the music (as
opposed to .mp3s),
our first call went to Bret
Logan,
the leadman of Jellyshirts,
to inquire about
the “great, lost
Jellyshirts album, Outside.”
Recorded
in the late
90’s, this second studio effort (Rays To The Sun, being their 1st)
ended up
being shelved after a short printing and no distribution. Over the
years, it has become
the classic “Holy Grail” for fans of the still
active Jellyshirts. Deemed a
“Desert Island Disc”
by most, it is not surprising that it still holds up as a musical
“gem” to this
day.

“The Album
format is dying along with
the CD. Digital downloads are robbing the artist of the quality and
full fidelity of the
medium in which they work. Downloads have also diminished the
importance of the Album as a
legitimate artistic presentation of the musical statement. The
Flashdrive format restores
all that and more.” says IndepenDisc owner Gary Vollono.
Embracing the further
advancement of technology, Gary
contacted Jellyshirts frontman, Bret Logan, about releasing Outside as
an album in USB
Flashdrive format.
Bret Logan responds:
“It didn't take
much convincing from Gary
to want Outside to be a part of his dream. While all the wranglings
that had caused the
album to be shelved were now gone, there was still little incentive to
release it on CD.
It had become clear that MP3 sales were now driving the music business
and that the CD was
going extinct. But that said, we also had no interest in releasing
Outside as a smattering
of MP3s. Not only are MP3s inferior quality, we also felt strongly that
Outside was
intended to be heard as an album.
What Gary
proposed was something I'd been hoping for for a long time: the
possibility of
distributing an album in better-than-CD-quality [.wav] format, and
requiring no moving
parts - nothing to
spin, skip, scratch, or
wear-out in any way. As
a bonus, the USB drive
also offers a lot more room than a CD, which let us add five more songs
not on the
original album, and an 8 min. video of original recording footage, plus
dozens of
pictures, and ‘liner notes’ sorts of extras."

There
you have it – Rest assured that it is the music that
fueled it all!
