Music, based out of Rome, Italy is a Surf label
run by Robert Ruggeri, a man with love of
the genre. It is home to
several Surf artists and has at various times released compilation CDs,
including
“That’s New Pussycat,” a surf tribute to
Burt Bacharach, and “American
Graffiti Revisited” a surf tribute to that movie’s
soundtrack. Now, once again,
Ruggeri’s OmOm Music label has produced a surf product that
goes above and beyond
your wildest expectations, a complete track-by-track reproduction of
“Jesus
Christ Superstar.” (note: This is the movie
soundtrack playlist, due to the
inclusion of 2 titles not found on the original 1970 pre-Broadway
recording).
To get into the
individual tracks and artist accomplishments represented
here would be to diminish from the project as a whole…
Using 25 of the finest
Surf bands from all corners of the globe, this
double CD will grab you from the opening “Overture”
to
the final notes of “John Nineteen
Forty One.” Whether
or not you are a fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s
masterpiece, Rock Opus,
that details the events of Holy Week as seen through the eyes of Judas
Iscariot, this is a
“Must Own” for the sake of the quality, passion,
and dedication that each of
these artists put into the making of this album. I cannot express just
how enjoyable this
is to listen to.
Yes, that is Jesus
surfing on his cross on the cover.
Blasphemous? Hardly.
OmOm’s artist, Wayno, brings the joy and love of
life, Christ, and surfing front and center to let us know, feel, and
understand what we
are about to hear.
The closest I can come
to explaining it is with the chorus refrain from
the track “Simon Zealotes”
by the Italian surf band
Pipelines, where they replace “Touch me touch me
Jesus” and “Kiss
me kiss me Jesus” with “Surf
me, surf me Jesus.” It is so
pure and simple, so full of love and life, that you can’t
stop smiling and singing
along.
