Surf
Music.
Fathered in 1961 by Dick Dale, it grew up in the 60s and never left.
While mostly forgotten or overlooked, it still thrives here in the
‘00s. Yes, you may have to visit many beaches, walk down many
a
pier, ride a few more waves, and look under the boardwalk to find it,
but it’s there. Make no mistake about it, the cats that are
still
playing it, play it with as much passion and conviction as there ever
was, and if there’s one thing that sets Surf Music apart from
the
rest, it is the unique passion and conviction needed of the artists to
do so.
With
that, we have The Clams:
a trio of East Coast (Connecticut) surfer dudes, Dano Clam (Dan
Surkis – guitar), Brain
Clammage (Brian Lashley – drums), and Wu-Tang Clam
(Matt Noonan – bass), whose passion and conviction leap off
the
CD cover artwork of a ½ dozen Clams partying, to take hold
of
our inner yearnings for the sand, sun, and surf…
(International
Clam of Mystery)
Dropped right onto the funkiest, ultra-coolest beach ever, we
immediately realize that we’re in the neighborhood of Maynard
G.
Krebs, 007, and Woody Station Wagons. With a tinge of Herb Albert on
the side, and a blast of Dick Dale’s Del-Tones mixed with The
Safaris and The Ventures, we’re looking the Rock Lobster in
the
eye as the chicks in Bikinis & Beehives are thrusting up a
storm
– And what a storm it is!
(Acting
Shellfishly)
We’re hanging 10 and not thinking about anything other than
ourshellves (sic). Catch the perfect wave, ride it while it lasts, and
if we finish by eating sand, it’ll all still be worth the
ride. (Ride The
Clamovan)
It’s the perfect sexual metaphor that takes us on a wild ride
up
and down the coast. Ultra-Dirty, Ultra-Hip, Ultra Sexy. (Clam of Evil,
Return of the Attack of the 9th Clam)
It invites B-Movie all the way. It’s Black & White,
it’s creatures, it’s running around in chaos.
You’ll
swear these dudes were chilling to some Ed Wood while tripping out on
‘shrooms. (Iron Clam)
It’s terrific! (Surfabilly
Shake) Ratchet it up, shake it down, Rock-n-Roll all the
way down, down-n-dirty and out to have a good time (Whomp
‘em) on the waves, in the surf and
crusin’ the sand.
(River of Tone)
The
Clams
lay down an Ultra-Funky rhythmic backbeat of bass and drums that take
up the funk, while the guitar comes fuzzed out and overly dirty enough
to lay down a walk-it-down intense groove, whether they are playing for
us on the beach, at the B-movies, or (Clam Nebula)
in outer space - Mystery Science Theater 3000, of course.
(Diggin’
the Clamdiggers) is what we’re hip to, how
‘bout you cats?
