The Mocking Birds have been a New Haven, CT tradition since 1992. While the line up has gone through a few changes over the years, they have basically remained in tact. The current line up is made up of original Mox James Velvet (songwriter, vocals, rhythm guitar), and Johnny Java (bass), joined in ’94 by Dick Neal (lead guitar), and finally John Peckman (drums) in 2000. The Mocking Birds play the last Saturday of every month at Café 9, like they have since ’92, and the Roots Rock they put forth spotlights the versatility and cohesiveness that can only come from a band that knows each others moves to a point that the professional quality of the artistic merit shines within the music that’s created.

Over the years The Mocking Birds have recorded and released a variety of CDs and EPs. None more appealing then the 3 EPs released between the Springs of 2000 & 2001: “Spring Collection” “Summer Born Great” and “Ten Thousand Nights.” Originally intended to be a 4 Disc set, with each disc representing a season and seasonal mood. But things didn’t work out – as life has a way of doing things like that to us – and after the 1^st two EPs (Spring, and Summer), the next two (Fall and Winter) ended up being compressed into one EP - later released as “Ten Thousand Nights”. All three were recorded “sorta-live®” by the patient Vic Steffens at Horizon Studios in West Haven, CT.

These 3 EPs containing 3 songs each blend into one another to reveal a 9 song CD that is a remarkable achievement in The Mocking Birds career. With a Roots Rock sound that make them peers of Buddy Holly, The Mox ROX with a Kinks like abandon that’ll have you digging everywhere they come from, ‘cause The Mox have kept the Roll in Rock-n-Roll, while delivering the Soul that the early Roots movement truly encompassed. Tight enough to deliver a sound that could back every one from Elvis Presely, Johnny Cash, and Roy Orbison, to Bob Dylan, and Neil Young, but loose enough the make the music their own.
