Fifteen Minute Long Sentence is a thoroughly enjoyable
concept performance piece
about fame. Written, performed and brought to us with passion, a
passion we all
have. A passion which makes us also appreciate the passion of others,
especially when that passion is expressed in an artistic form. Jennifer Hill’s passion is music, and here she
displays/presents/gives us that passion in a mini-Broadway musical.
Taking her
cues from a multitude of influences, she stages a semi-autobiographical
tale
using a sophisticated roadhouse sound that’ll have the
audience returning night
after night to cheer her on.
Act One relates the tale of a talented woman caught
up in a damaged relationship that is choking her natural instincts.
I Decay opens the
story using a bouncing piano of Billy Joel sensibility to construct
this story of
drive and desire. The musicianship of her “Co.” strikes the right
chords and balances as she
musters the courage to set out and fulfill her dreams, needs, and
desires. Kick
‘em is a classic tale
of the sweet, talented, taken-advantage-of girl who bares her teeth and
fights
for what she wants with a toughness you don’t want to fuck
with. It is great
song writing which melds hard-hitting lyrics with top notch musical
accompaniment that brings back the lost technique of the middle eights.
Pull
Off Your Wings
mixes a down and dirty Ben Folds piano with Jennifer’s vocal
versatility to
bring the unwanted business end into her dream. Her realization that
the
economic reality of survival will censor her to the brink of failure,
crashes
into her heartfelt desires and serves to strengthen her resolve. This
is evident
within the musical score - we’re not left to guess, we know.
Act Two begins with Downlow,
an homage to the man who
truly does believe in her, so much so that after an initial reluctance
to
become involved once again, she realizes the potential power this team
can weld
upon creation. Here Jennifer displays her knack for composing a
soliloquy of
lust and yearning that’ll have you sweating and full of
desire. Stay
then takes all that lust, yearning, sweat, and desire, drops it in a
bouncing
Steely Dan-esque piano, and gives it the Mojo it needs to let us know
that
she’s drawing even more of her untapped talent off of him.
Awesome slide guitar
work represents the central point that we all need to find the person
whose passion
includes our own as well. That is when we can begin to realize the
enjoyment of
our dreams, needs, and desires.
Dismiss The Sun brings the curtain down with a
glorious
show-stopper that sails into the sunset upon Jennifer’s vocal
and piano work.
Stunning in its beauty, here the focus isn’t so much upon the
story as it is
upon the grand, lush, triumphant conclusion that nestles itself within
the
fantasy of our heroine, yet allows us to realize her dream within the
passion
that she has presented it to us in.
Jennifer Hill’s
passion
presents her fifteen minutes of fame in one long sentence, and upon
it’s
conclusion we do return to cheer her on.
