ISSUE #40

Imagine you’re
in the batters box, you’ve been fed a steady diet
of fastballs and change ups, then, the pitcher unleashes the unexpected
– A curve
ball – it freezes you, helpless to do nothing but admire the
surreal beauty with
utmost fascination. Arcing out, far and away from the norm, to
ultimately return and sail
across the plate. With an entrancing quality, it causes you to forget
all else, and you
smile with acknowledgement that it caught you off guard, that it is
something special;
delivered with an artist’s grace, and a master’s
touch it accomplishes its goal.
The
Nymphaeum by Angelwing,
decidedly
New Age, it has no place catching us off guard and capturing our
admiration, but it does.
As unexpected as the slow sailing arc of the curve ball, we found
ourselves drawn into the
entrancing quality of the music – Forget the fact that we are
rockers at heart,
forget the fact that we do not connect with so called “New
Age Music” a la Enya
and the like, forget all else – This CD has everything it
takes to freeze our musical
preconceptions and accept that Angelwing
has delivered a fascinating work
of surreal beauty.
The opening track, Radical Seed,
and the closing track, Tears Of Joy,
are the only vocal tracks.
They feature the unique talents of Reenie Varga
and Erin Shawn
Hawkins bestowing upon us dreamlike, eerie harmonies:
the roots of which are
drawn from medieval times, and whose branches extend to the outer
reaches of the heavens.
These songs introduce and culminate the CD, which takes it’s
title from the five part
symphonic interlude/suite, The Nymphaeum Parts I
– V, that owes more than
you would expect to mid 70’s Prog
Rock. Rick Costello is the central
Artist/Composer here, and more than
once we found the influences of early Emerson, Lake, and Palmer
(particularly Take A
Pebble from their 1st LP) cropping up among the
intricate arrangements of
classical piano and guitar work, which is nothing short of astounding.
While many will view
this as a background disc, we here at IndepenDisc
recommend you take in the full beauty of this “New
Age” curve ball. Admire it
for what it is, don’t let it get by you without at least the
acknowledgement that it
is something special delivered with an artist’s grace, and a
master’s touch. Sit
back, listen, and smile as Angelwing
unleashes the unexpected and
accomplishes their goal.
