Beatniks,
Music, and the Birth of a Scene
In a small club
in New Haven, CT, a revival of sorts is occurring. The
elements
of the 1960's Beatnik scene -- poetry, original music, percussion, a
dimly-lit pub, a vibrant arts community, free spirits and a casual
mood, and numerous
and
diverse performers -- is in place. Some are reliving what once was...
some are
experiencing it for the first time.
300 Mondays is an independent film produced by Reflection
Productions
documenting the Beatnik music scene at Cafe Nine in New Haven. It is a
compilation of approximately 15 New Haven musicians and poets mingled
with interviews of some of the performers, managers, business types,
and
fans. It
records the fascinating story of over 7 years of Monday night
performances in a
row through interviews with Ed Leonard (Beatnik Night founder) and
other
musicians. Many of the performances from the 300th Beatnik night
occurring
on 2-17-06 were filmed for this documentary. Poets, solo musicians,
rappers,
country artists, singer/songwriters, and numerous other genres of
performers
were added alongside the interviews of individuals involved in the
scene.
